Exploring National Educational Survey Data With Qlik Sense

The National Restaurant Association Educational Foundation (NRAEF)—which provides training and education in the restaurant, foodservice, and hospitality industry—required data collection, analysis, and reporting support to glean additional insights from its national survey of students and educators.

With a few clicks of a button, NRAEF is able to conduct custom comparisons and calculations and then follow a line of inquiry to uncover insights.

Challenge

Every three years, NRAEF conducts a survey of students and educators participating in its ProStart program in order to capture key information surrounding program engagement, successes, industry perceptions, mentorship, post-high school plans, and more. While the results are invaluable for the breadth and depth of information they provide to NRAEF to guide its ProStart program, the data’s volume and complexity make it difficult to analyze and explore flexibly and from a diverse variety of views. NRAEF asked ORI to not only manage the survey development, deployment, and collection process but also provide a mechanism for asking questions of the data, a way to conduct ad hoc analyses, and the ability to report out on findings—all while maintaining the highest standards of analytic integrity and statistical soundness.

Solution

ORI implemented Qlik Sense® to bring student and educator data from current and previous periods together in one platform to analyze all data points, including demographic, chronological, and student/educator comparisons; test for statistically significant differences across numerous variables; provide the capability to explore the data; and visualize and report out on findings.

Outcome

By implementing Qlik, NRAEF reduced manual workload for report preparation and sharing while also enabling maximum flexibility in the depth and breadth of data exploration. With a few clicks of a button, NRAEF is able to conduct custom comparisons and calculations and then follow a line of inquiry to uncover insights.
